BANGALORE: It's been a little over a year since
Murali Vijay last played a Test. Even back then he did not play as a first or second choice opener but could only get a look-in because
Virender Sehwag and
Gautam Gambhir had opted out of the West Indies tour.
On Saturday, in the company of
Ajinkya Rahane, also a serious and equally worthy aspirant for a spot in the Indian Test side, Vijay did his chances of a recall no harm.
Of course, the new selection committee set to be constituted at the end of the month will need to consider the quality of bowling (or the lack of it) that Vijay (batting on 151) and Rahane (81) were up against at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Saturday.
It was not their fault that the opposition hardly had the bowling to trouble the Rest of India team. Their fine effort, and also that of skipper
Cheteshwar Pujara (78) ensured that their side ended Day Two of the five-day Irani Cup match firmly in control of the proceedings. ROI were comfortably placed at 328 for two, a handy 75 ahead of Rajasthan's 253.
Brief scores: Rest of India 328 for 2 (Vijay 151*, Rahane 81, Pujara 78) lead Rajasthan 253 by 75 runs
